Career Transitions for International Students in Taiwan
As you approach graduation, securing employment or an internship in Taiwan requires careful planning regarding both your career fit and your legal residency status. To work legally, you must ensure your prospective employer is prepared to sponsor your Work Permit, or you must qualify for independent residency tracks.
Internship Opportunities After Graduation
If you choose to pursue an internship following your studies rather than immediate full-time employment, you may apply for an ARC (Alien Resident Certificate) extension specifically for internship purposes.

Work Permit Eligibility & Pathways
There are two primary methods to obtain legal authorization to work in Taiwan:
1. The New Scoring Criteria (Point System)
Most graduates utilize the New Scoring Criteria for specialized professionals. Under this system, your work permit application is evaluated based on a point-based hierarchy rather than a strict minimum salary requirement. You must accrue a minimum of 70 points across several categories:
-
Academic background and degree level.
-
Proposed salary level.
-
Relevant work experience and professional qualifications.
-
Proficiency in Chinese and other foreign languages.
-
Experience living or growing up in diverse international environments.
Proactive Tip: Boost your candidacy by providing a pre-filled self-evaluation form to your employer. Include supporting documents such as your diploma, labor agreement, CV, and language proficiency certificates to simplify their filing process.
2. The Employment Gold Card
High-level professionals may be eligible to apply for an Employment Gold Card independently. This is a 4-in-1 visa that includes a work permit, resident visa, ARC, and re-entry permit, allowing you to change jobs or work freelance without employer sponsorship.
3. Specialized Pathway for NTU Graduates
As a graduate of National Taiwan University (NTU), you benefit from specific regulatory advantages. Under current Ministry of Labor (MOL) regulations, graduates from the world’s top 200 universities are eligible for a streamlined application process to engage in professional work.

Long-term Residency (APRC)
Once your work permit is approved, you can transition from a Student ARC to a Work ARC. It is important to note that years accumulated under a Work ARC contribute toward the residency requirements for an Alien Permanent Resident Certificate (APRC), providing a path to permanent residency in Taiwan.
