Upon graduation from National Taiwan University (NTU), your status as a student terminates. Consequently, an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) issued for the purpose of “Study” will become invalid, which also impacts your National Health Insurance (NHI) enrollment.
If you intend to remain in Taiwan following your departure from NTU, please review the following pathways to ensure your legal residency status:
If you wish to remain in Taiwan, you must update your residency status before your current ARC expires.
Employment: If you have secured a job offer, ensure that your employer initiates the work permit application promptly. You must transition to a Work ARC while your student ARC remains valid.
Further Studies: If you have been admitted to a new degree program, you may extend your current ARC using your Admission Letter (typically before February or August). This bridge extension covers the period until you receive your new official Enrollment Certificate.
Job Seeking (Post-Graduation Extension): * Graduates are eligible to extend their ARC for the purpose of “seeking employment.”
This extension is granted in one-year increments for a maximum of two years total.
While on a job-seeking extension, you are permitted to work part-time without a separate work permit.
Professional Work Permit (Global Top 200 Universities): As an NTU graduate, you may qualify for a specialized work permit. Under current regulations, graduates from the world’s top 200 universities can apply directly to the Ministry of Labor to engage in professional work.
Note: Once a work permit is granted, you may apply for a Work ARC. Years spent under a Work ARC contribute toward the residency requirement for an Alien Permanent Resident Certificate (APRC).
For detailed criteria, please visit the website below:
If your residency is based on other grounds (e.g., Joining Family or Employment), your ARC remains valid according to its original expiration date. However, your NHI status may still be affected by your change in student status.
Action Required: Please visit the National Health Insurance Administration (Taipei Division) to verify and update your enrollment status.
If you do not have an ARC but wish to remain in Taiwan to work after graduation:
Apply for a Work Permit (Global Top 200 Universities) using your NTU Graduation Certificate.
Once the Work Permit is issued, proceed to the National Immigration Agency to apply for a Work ARC.
Refer to the Ministry of Labor’s guidelines regarding professional work for graduates of top-tier universities.
If you need to apply for a leave of absence or withdraw from NTU completely, please follow the instructions below:
1. Download and fill out the appropriate application form.
a. Undergraduate students: Leave of Absence / Withdrawal
b. Graduate students: Leave of Absence / Withdrawal

3. If you are not able to complete the process yourself directly, also include the Letter of Authorization.
4. Fill out Leaving NTU Declaration Form and submit to the Office of International Affairs.
5. Hand in the Application form to the Office of Academic Affairs.
If you would like to re-enroll to NTU after your leave of absence period is over, please simply pay the tuition fee of the semester within the payment deadline.
You’ll be able to use the same NTU account to access myNTU and register for courses.
If you intend to re-enroll to NTU earlier than planned, you need to submit an Early Re-enrollment Application to Office of Academic Affairs. The submission deadline is listed within the form instruction. You can download the form on their website, or below:
1. Early Reenrollment Application Form (Undergraduate)

Consequently, any Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) issued for the purpose of “Study” will be cancelled by the National Immigration Agency, which also terminates your National Health Insurance (NHI) enrollment.
To maintain legal residency in Taiwan after your departure from NTU, please follow the appropriate pathway below:
You must update your residency status before your current ARC is invalidated. Failure to do so may result in overstay penalties and mandatory departure.
Thesis Completion & Status Maintenance: If you require additional time to complete your thesis, please ensure you apply for a leave of absence near the administrative deadline and promptly enroll for the subsequent semester by completing tuition payment to maintain your valid student ARC status.
Employment: If you have secured a job offer, ensure your employer obtains a Work Permit from the Ministry of Labor (MOL) immediately. You must transition to a Work ARC while your student ARC remains valid.
Further Studies: If admitted to a new degree program, you may apply for a bridge extension of your current ARC using your Admission Letter (typically processed before February or August). This extension covers the interim period until you receive your new official Enrollment Certificate.
Job Seeking (Top 200 Universities Pathway): Under current Ministry of Labor regulations, graduates from the world’s top 200 universities (including NTU) are eligible to apply directly for a permit to engage in professional work.
