Take a deeper dive into the language and culture of Taiwan

NTU offers Chinese Courses with credits to international students, which are the General Chinese Course, Enhancing Chinese Course, and Applied Chinese Course.
While you can take just General Chinese Course, Enhancing Chinese Course is an add-on to the General Chinese Course and must be taken in conjunction with General Chinese Course.
Applied Chinese Course is separate from the General and Enhancing Chinese Courses, and you can take Applied Chinese Course without a placement test. Just add the course during course selection stages.

General & Enhancing Chinese Courses

General & Enhancing Chinese Courses are offered only for NTU’s international students and can be added only by NTU staff after students submit the registration form. Students who wish to take the course are required to register and take the placement test on the designated date and place.

General Chinese Course

General Chinese is for international students who wish to learn or improve their Chinese language skills. Classes are available at different levels, ranging from absolute beginners to fluent conversationalists.

General Chinese Course is a 3-credit course for international students who wish to learn/improve their Chinese language skills. Students learn 6 hours of Chinese language training in class per week.

You can only enroll in General Chinese Course for one academic year. Students who have taken General/Enhancing Chinese Courses in the first semester will be automatically enrolled in the second semester to the next level. Please confirm your Chinese courses on the Course Selection System at the end of Week One.

Course Description: From daily Chinese to advanced Chinese, including: reading, speaking, listening, writing.
Class Duration: 6 hrs/ week, 15 weeks

Enhancing Chinese Course

**You can only take Enhancing Chinese Course in conjunction with General Chinese Course**

If you’re looking for intensive study, Enhancing Chinese offers that challenge. Enhancing Chinese Course provides an additional 4 hours of Chinese practice per week.

Credits: 1 Credit
Levels: All
Class Size: 15~25 students
Course Description: This is a supporting course that offers extra practice hours in addition to General Chinese Course.
Class Duration: 4 hrs/ week, 15 weeks

You must attend the placement test if you want to enroll in General Chinese Course. You do not need to take the placement test is you only plan to take the Applied Chinese Course.

Registration and Placement Test for General Chinese Course

If you are a new student,

1. Attend the in-person registration (schedule listed below) and bring:

a. Your Student ID Card or Admission Letter

b. A Pen

2. Fill out the registration form to indicate your preferred class time and if you’d like to take Enhancing Chinese Course at the same time.

3. Take the placement test right after registration.

4. Take an oral test. (Undergraduate students who did not pass the Chinese proficiency test need to take an oral test)

5. Check the placement results on the OIA website (News) one week later and make sure there are no time conflicts with your other courses.

If you are a current student who’s never taken General Chinese Course,

- - Contact intstudent@ntu.edu.tw to apply for the course at least 40 days before the placement test.

※ Important:

If you have never learned Chinese before, you must attend the registration on the test date, but you may opt out of the placement test. If you do not register on the test date, you will not be able to take the General Chinese Course.
Current students who have taken General/Enhancing Chinese Course for the first semester will be automatically enrolled in the second semester to the next level. Please confirm your Chinese courses on the Course Selection System at the end of Week One.

Applied Chinese Courses

Course Introduction

Applied Chinese consists of topic-based courses that can be taken for credits. Topics include day-to-day use, business, classics, idioms, poetry, and even Taiwanese language. Through these practical yet interesting subjects, students get to further experience local culture.

The Applied Chinese Course is a topic-based course with 2 credits/course. You are not required to take the Placement Test to add the course, you can directly select the course from the Course Selection System. Enrollment in Applied Chinese Courses follows the Schedule of Academics Affairs in Online Course Selection System. For more information, visit NTU Online Course Information.

Chinese Language Learning Program

NTU Plus Academy Short-Term Programs

NTU Plus Academy provides intriguing courses for students from around the world to experience Taiwan and NTU for 4-6 weeks through topic-based short-term programs, including language learning programs. All courses can be taken for credits, and students will be provided a transcript and certificate upon completion.

Chinese Language Division of the Language Center (CLD)

Chinese Language Division of the Language Center (CLD) has year-round Mandarin Chinese programs for all levels of proficiencies, tutoring classes as well as customized program (studying tours). Classes are conducted in Chinese even for beginners, offering an all-Chinese-speaking environment, and encouraging students to speak in Chinese under all circumstances. CLD also arranges orientation, campus tours and extracurricular activities every season such as cultural events, lectures, spring and autumn excursions to famous cultural attractions, etc.

International Chinese Language Program (ICLP)

The International Chinese Language Program (ICLP) is Taiwan’s premier institution for the instruction of both modern and classical Chinese. We offer an intensive Chinese program of 20 class hours weekly, covering language use in both professional and practical settings, in a fully immersive Chinese-speaking environment. ICLP classes focus on aural-oral training and interactive exercises, featuring small class sizes (2-4 students) and one-on-one instruction to help students progress effectively in a short period of time. The available course materials cover a wide range of subjects, including culture, news, films, business, law, literature, classical Chinese, translation, etc. Long-term and short-term customized courses are also available. In 2020, we launched the Chinese Gap Year (CGY) program, combining language learning with daily life and cultural experience to attract outstanding high school graduates from around the world for an immersive and intensive Chinese learning experience, shaping a positive impression of Taiwan.
